Detours from Discipleship

Sermon: 8/18/2019

What are the Detours to Discipleship?

Text: Matthew 28:18-20

18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Detour #1 - Fear of Involvement with People

Involvement with people can be engaging or people can entangle you, so you would rather keep to yourself.

You need to contemplate the spiritual deficiency in others and be involved.

The Greek verb for "teach" in "teach all nations" is translated "make disciples" in many Bible translations. The meaning of this Greek verb for "teach" is to become attached to one’s teacher and to become his follower in doctrine and conduct of life.

In Greek grammar, the verb is Aorist Imperative Active:

  • Active means that you do it.
  • Imperative means that it is urgent and a command.
  • Aorist is a summary of what needs to happen without specifying a time frame. As long as we are here, this command doesn't expire.

ChristWay desires to be the most personable and interactive church.

  • Do you need to grow in attachments and involvement with people, especially those outside your already established group?
  • Who can you attach yourself to and learn from?
  • Who can you meet during the week to read your Bible and pray with?
  • Who in this room?
  • Who do you need to mentor and help and get with because they need to learn something from you?

Romans 1:10-12

10 Making request, if by any means now at length I might have a prosperous journey by the will of God to come unto you.

11 For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established;

12 That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me.

Detour #2 - Neglecting What God Said

Matthew 28:20 " Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you..."

How are you going to teach people to observe His commandments if you don’t read and study your Bible?

Could you read the Bible and keep notes? Journal?

Could you get together with someone and read the Bible together?

Detour #3 – Spending Time on Things Other Than Jesus

Matthew 28:20 ...and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.

All power was given to Him to accomplish this mission. He is always with you for this mission.

Do you access Jesus to accomplish the mission?
