Sermon Question

How will you make disciples if you are not a disciple?

Sermon Answer

You will make disciples of others if you abide with God.

God Abides with Believers

John 14:23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

  • Jesus is preparing a place for you to live with Him forever. In the meantime, He comes to live with you. He abides with you. He gives you the Holy Spirit, the promise that He is coming to take you with Him to Heaven.

God Abides with You and You Choose to Abide with Him

John 15:1-4

1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.

2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.

3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.

4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.

Interferences to Abiding

  • Sin
  • Discouragement
  • Need to be entertained
  • Complexity of 21st century life
  • Managing health
  • Raising kids
  • Holidays and vacations

...But You Feel Useless and Unfruitful

John 15:5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

If you are frustratingly fruitless...

  • Do you do life with Jesus?
  • Do you abide in His word?
  • Do you think about what Jesus said?
  • Do you apply Jesus' words to your life?

...But You Feel Burned Out

John 15:6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

  • Christians who don’t abide with God feel withered, barren, and dry.
  • Christians who don't abide with God feel disconnected from the Holy Spirit.
  • Christians who don't abide with God feel burned out.
  • Burn out doesn’t come from doing too much but from doing it without abiding in Jesus.

Abiding Involves Glorifying God

John 15:7-8

7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.

8 Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.

  • When you are the star of your life, you will be a shooting star that burns bright for awhile and then burns out.
  • A Christian who abides with Jesus understands that he or she plays a supporting role in the story of God’s glory.

Abiding Requires Awareness of God's Love

John 15:9-11

9 As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.

10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.

11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.

  • Do I have to obey God for Him to love me?

Romans 11:33 - 12:2

33 O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!

34 For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counselor?

35 Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again?

36 For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory forever. Amen.

1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God
